Chapter 13

Garic

I t was three days. I kept telling myself that Luc would be perfectly fine here in Montana without me for three days. He’d felt healthy the entire pregnancy, and that was a relief. I knew I felt on edge about it as much as I did because he was pregnant, and being apart would get easier the more I was sent on assignments. But this first time separated from him had me on edge, and the others on the team seemed to be able to sense it.

“Do you want us to talk to Reinhold?” Benjamin asked. I shook my head. They needed me for this assignment. I was currently the only vampire on rotations in the enforcers, and that was what was needed. The issue was with Master Nikolai’s coven—still. This shouldn’t be a problem, but apparently, there were still more problems in the Evergreen pack than not.

“No. I need to do this. It’s difficult to be away from him, and I think it will be more so once our little guy gets here. But right now, Luc will have an easier time of things since he’s still carrying the baby. At least, I sure hope so.”

Benjamin chuckled. “I knew what you meant. He’s carrying the baby now and wouldn’t have to actively take care of him alone. Congratulations on the little guy, by the way.” Benjamin sighed. “Maybe someday, I’ll find my mate and have a bunch of kids.”

“Did you want several?”

Benjamin nodded. “As many as my future fated mate wants.” Benjamin’s cheeks turned a bit pink, and he looked down at the floor. “I realize that might be difficult to believe with my history with your brother. I’m too old to not enjoy life until I find my One.”

“No judgment from me. I get it.” I glanced off toward the door. Luc was on the other side of the building in a meeting with Justin. “I think vampires—more than anyone else—understand that. It’s true we don’t need to have sex to feed. It just works better that way, especially when we have an unknowing human as that night’s donor.”

Neither Luc nor I were saints. My beloved was older than I was by a few decades, and was it enjoyable thinking about past lovers? Absolutely not. But we both knew that was just how things worked. Neither of us held it against one another.

“How are you doing? I mean with Sebastian joining the enforcers?”

Benjamin grumbled something under his breath. “Fine,” he said loud enough for me to hear. “I realize I’m contradicting what we were just talking about. The issue with Sebastian is that we were a thing. I was too young and naive, so it’s all on me. He’d moved on, had given me all of the signs that things were over between us, but I didn’t listen.”

I patted Benjamin on the shoulder. “You were young. He was older. Much older, from what I understand. He shouldn’t have played around and hinted. He should have told you how it was.
